CBS Is Very Upset With Robert Redford’s ‘Truth’

CBS is maaadddd. If you are one of those people who thought that CBS was the television network equivalent of your narcoleptic grandpa, you’d be wrong. Turns out the old gal has a little fight in her and the network has been showing it ever since Sony Pictures and it’s new  film “Truth” starring Cate Blanchett and Robert Redford decided it wanted an advertise the movie on CBS. What’s the problem you may be asking? Well, the film tells the story of the infamous 2004 “60 Minutes II” segment on George W. Bush’s lack of service during his stint in the National Guard. The story has been a thorn in the side of the network, they even admit the segment should have never seen the light of day. If you’re unfamiliar with the story this snippet from the New York Times article sums it up:

“Truth” portrays the reporting behind — and the unraveling of — a segment based on documents that suggested Mr. Bush got preferential treatment for his National Guard service in the early 1970s.Twelve days after the story was broadcast, in the heat of the 2004 presidential election, CBS said it could not authenticate the documents and apologized. Mary Mapes, the producer of the segment and the author of the book that the movie is based on, was fired. Three other producers resigned. And Dan Rather, who was the correspondent on the piece, announced that he was retiring as CBS’s evening news anchor two months later.”

I’m still confused as to why Sony bothered making a movie about this particular incident in the first place. I mean the movie’s getting fairly good reviews, but lets be honest it’s hard not to get good reviews when you have Robbie Redford (aka old Brad Pitt) and Cate “Oscar-bait” Blanchett. I don’t blame CBS for wanting nothing to do with this film thats like someone making you relive your most embarrassing moment every commercial break. But if it makes CBS feel any better I’m sure that Brain Williams war flick is on it’s way.
