Check Out The New Trailer For ‘Barbershop 3’

barbershopheader2

Just when you thought barbershops were safe to go into again, MGM had to go and do this shit to us. Ice Cube and company are back and the shop is open again, even though we hoping that motherfucker went bankrupt. The trailer for Barbershop 3 was released today and this time around though, instead of their typical “urban” foolishness,  Cubey and the gang decided to do what Spike Lee seemingly couldn’t and that’s single-handedly stop the black on black violence in inner city Chicago. If you’re not familiar with the ‘Barbershop’ franchise then allow me to jog your memory. Back in 2002 Ice Cube produced an urban comedy about a black, middle-class small business owner and a day in his crazy but realistic  life. Here’s a synopsis of that film:

On a cold winter, Calvin Palmer, Jr. decides he has had enough of trying to keep open the barbershop his father handed down to him. He cannot borrow, revenues are falling, and he seems more interested in get-rich-quick schemes to bring in easy money. Without telling his employees, or the customers, he sells the barbershop to a greedy loan shark, Lester Wallace, who lies about its future by announcing plans to turn it into a strip club.

Now sure that sounds like some “save the rec center” type of bullshit but I must credit the film for taking a tired, predicable, cliche ridden plot into something that not only had some heart but also showed black people in a positive light. The sequel on the other hand was just some bullshit and the Queen Latifah spin-off “Beauty Shop” was just as bad, even though it seemed to at least try. This time around though, I gotta say I was slightly surprised by what I saw, in the trailer at least. That’s because I was waiting on those same old “black” humor that Hollywood seems to demand before greenlighting a mainly black lead film. I must admit it was refreshing to see Ice Cube’s character Calvin now in an upscale version of his former barbershop. Everyone new and old seems happy now and all seems good and well…all except the fact this takes place in 2015 Chicago which has been compared to war torn Iraq by some people (Spike Lee. Chiraq, get it now?). It was no way they could have set this film in modern day inner city Chicago without acknowledging the rampant violence that has plagued the city. The trailer goes from refreshing to heavy-handed and cheesy. I for one will pass on ‘The Next Cut” I think I’m good.
