We’re almost in August now and we have no confirmation that The Winds of Winter is nearing completion. I have no idea how long a publisher needs to edit and put a manuscript on the shelves for purchase. At the rate we’re going, I think we’ll see the end of Season 7 before getting our hands on TWOW. I also don’t believe the ASOIAF story can be completed in two books. GRRM has said he has enough material to estimate 1500 pages per book and his publishers seem to keep each book around 1000pp. My guess is that (once it’s completed) his publisher will trim TWOW to 1000 pages, keep 500pp to supplement the first third of the final book and release a full volume between TWOW and A Dream of Spring (if the title stays that way.
Is anyone out there still refusing to watch the show to not be exposed to spoilers? How often do you come across show spoilers online without warning? Thoughts on George R.R. Martin’s writing speed?
I won’t lie, I’m really worried about GRRM possibly dying before he finishes the series. Er… that sounds more cold-blooded than I meant it to. I just mean that there’s a very real possibility that the show’s ending might be the ONLY ending we get for the story of ASOIAF.
He’s projected a 2017 release date for Winds of Winter, though I’m sure that we won’t see it in stores until 2018 at earliest. Who knows about the rest? I’m not holding my breath that there will be a whole extra book between TWOW and ADOS, but the lengths of those two will probably be the longest in the series.
That being said, I firmly believe that the show and the books are separate entities. My enjoyment of one won’t effect the other, and I seriously doubt that GRRM would sabotage his own work by allowing the show to spoil his books. There’s so much more going on in the books that doesn’t even get mentioned in the show that I’m not worried about them ending the same way. Some stuff will probably be similar, like Dany eventually joining forces with some of the great houses in Westeros to take over King’s Landing, and the eventual fight with the Others, but they’ve been hinted at and pretty much assured almost from the beginning… I don’t think they even count as “spoilers”.
