Oh Shit, Mary Poppins Is Getting A Sequel
See everyone patience does pay off. For all of you clamoring for that Mary Poppins sequel, you’re in luck and it only took a short…50 years for it to happen. Well, I guess should of said all of you who are still alive. Anyway, it’s true Disney is planning on giving us a Mary Poppins 2. The studio with the mouse continues to revamp, reboot, and rejuvenate everything but the kitchen sink (which they plan on rebooting next year). Rob Marshall who recently brought you Disney’s Into the Woods will be the one directing the project while John DeLuca and Marc Platt produce. Apparently the film will be a musical just as the original was, other details confirm that the story picks up 20 years after the events of the first film and will take some of the storylines from other books featuring everyones favorite magical nanny. The original books were written by P.L. Travers back in 1934 and she was even given her very own biopic, Saving Mr. Banks starring Emma Thompson and Tom Hanks also made by Disney. When that movie was released in 2013 I figured it was only a matter of time before the suits at Disney figured out they still owned Mary Poppins.
I must admit (although I’m not proud of it) I’ve never seen all of the 1964 Mary Poppins, I attempted several times when I was a child but I just couldn’t get into it. I wasn’t sold and have yet to give it another go. I did grow up a big Dick Van Dyke fan and as a kid I always felt bad that he was a broke ass chimney sweep struggling to find work. I could only assume he was doing very unsavory things to make money on the streets. But now with this news, I feel I should put all those old thoughts aside and give the film a clean slate. Although I almost feel obligated to sit down and watch it again, this time maybe I’ll find the magic in it millions of people of have throughout the years.
