Oh shit it looks like Idris Elba is in search of that Oscar gold. Netflix released the full trailer for beasts of no nation today and after seeing the trailer for this and the danish girl it seems that this years Oscar competition might be very very stiff. If you’re unfamiliar with the film here’s the quick synopsis:

Beasts of No Nation is based on the highly-acclaimed novel by Nigerian author Uzodinma Iweala, bringing to life the gripping tale of Agu, a child soldier torn from his family to fight in the civil war of an African country.

The trailer is very intense first time actor Abraham Attah who plays the child soldier, Agu almost breaks your heart from the moment you see him. He’s a child who has clearly lost everything he’s ever known and loved by the violence of war. It seems from that point on his life will take more dark and disturbing turns further exterminating his innocence. The man who is leading him down this road is the character I’m most interested in and that is Commandant played by Golden Globe winner Idris Elba. I haven’t seen the movie yet, of course. But I can’t help but feel that the relationship between Commandant and Agu will be the bread-and-butter of the film. The first thing that popped into my mind after watching this trailer was Whiplash. I wonder if Elba’s character is something reminiscent of JK Simmon’s character in Whiplash just way more hardcore. It seems Commandant is an evil warlord at first glance, then you start to see a father/son dynamic but at the same time he’s priming the young man to be a vicious, heartless killer. That raises the question is Commandant doing that because he believes at the end of the day being that vicious killer is the only way the boy can survive the harsh war torn land? These questions fascinate the hell out of me and makes me look forward to this that much more. Check out the trailer for yourself and tells what you guys think.
