Zach Galligan’s Interesting ‘Gremlins 3″ Pitch

gremlins-700

Ok, I’m writing this article out of full on fanboy, film geek obligation…and genuine love. Back in 1984 Joe Dante and Chris Columbus created one of my all-time favorite films, Gremlins. It was almost made to be an alternate christmas movie that people watched on christmas when they were tired of snowmen, santa and reindeer. The film wasn’t your typical Christmas movie heres the official synopsis for the first Gremlins movie:

A gadget salesman is looking for a special gift for his son and finds one at a store in Chinatown. The shopkeeper is reluctant to sell him the “mogwai” but sells it to him with the warning to never expose him to bright light, water, or to feed him after midnight. All of this happens and the result is a gang of gremlins that decide to tear up the town on Christmas Eve.

Sounds fun, right? It was a hit for audiences and critics, so when a sequel was announced no doubt people were hyped. Surely, the film was going to stick with the alt-christmas thing again right? The same tone that made the original work would without question work a second time. But that wasn’t the case for the second film things went a little more balls to the wall, heres that films official synopsis:

The magical collectibles store that Gizmo calls home has just been destroyed, and the tiny monster finds his way into a newly erected skyscraper. Billy Peltzer (Zach Galligan) and his bride-to-be, Kate (Phoebe Cates), who have previously dealt with Gremlins run amok, discover that Gizmo and an impish legion of reptilian pals are inhabiting the downtown building. The couple tries to stop the creatures from escaping into New York City, but this new batch of beasts might be uncontrollable.

Now, star Zach Galligan, is sort of pitching his own treatment for Gremlins 3 which he wrote years ago. Galligan’s idea basically was, Gizmo is sold on Ebay to someone in the UK, they feed him after midnight, blah, blah, Gremlins eventually take over a small London town. But maybe Galligan can make it sound more exciting heres what he said:

“Do you know what a fractal is? A fractal is when you have one thing that’s a piece, and when you put them together it makes an entire piece. So if you had a little baby pyramid and you put other pyramids together you’d make one big pyramid. So the gremlins [would] all mass together and form one huge gremlin. Kind of like a Godzilla-sized one that bursts out of London knocking over Big Ben and stuff like that.”

Yeah. I think I’ll hold out hope that Chris Columbus or Joe Dante return with some ideas.
