Tarantino Hates True Detective – The Daily Double Talk

By Tommy McGrew

It’s been a whole since we’ve heard from one of our most prized film directors. Quentin Tarantino was recently interview by New York magazine (read full interview here) and he had a lot to say about…a lot. The hateful eight director expressed his feelings on a number of subjects. First off, if you’re ever asked a trivia question regarding who QT’s favorite United States president is you should answer Barack Obama. Turns out the 44th president is Tarantino’s favorite, “I think he’s fantastic. He’s my favorite president, hands down, of my lifetime.” He went on to say, “His he-doesn’t-give-a-sh– attitude has just been so cool.” And let’s be honest if Tarantino knows anything it’s coolness, well, his movies anyway, don’t forget about his 106 and park appearance on BET in 2012 that shit was far from cool. Another surprising opinion he threw out there was the fact that he doesn’t think Cate Blanchett films have much staying power, he said, “Half of these Cate Blanchett movies – they’re all just like these arty things. I’m not saying they’re bad movies, but I don’t think most of them have a shelf life. But The Fighter or American Hustle – those will be watched in 30 years.” QT went on to praise director David O. Russell’s films American Hustle and The Fighter while taking a slight shot at Ben Affleck’s The Town, “…next to The Fighter, it [The Town] just couldn’t hold up, because everybody in The Town is beyond gorgeous…the crook is absolutely gorgeous. The bank teller is absolutely gorgeous. The FBI guy is absolutely gorgeous. The town whore, Blake Lively, is absolutely gorgeous. Jeremy Renner is the least gorgeous guy, and he’s pretty f—ing good-looking. Then, if you look at The Fighter, and you look at those sisters, they’re just so magnificent.” Apparently putting really pretty people in films is a pet peeve for the Oscar winning filmmaker. That is one of the main reasons he’s steered clear of the latest season of HBO’s True Detective, “…season two looks awful. Just the trailer – all these handsome actors trying to not be handsome and walking around looking like the weight of the world is on their shoulders. It’s so serious, and they’re so tortured, trying to look miserable with their mustaches and grungy clothes.” To be fair though, Tarantino did admit to watching the first episode of the first season but said it was really boring. No matter what you think of the guy it’s hard not to be entertained by he and his thoughts. He’s truly the last of a dying breed.
