The Internet Will Miss ‘Key and Peele’

Tonight marks the end of era. Another one of Comedy Central’s landmark shows will come to an end. Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele will both say goodbye tonight on the series finale of their show Key and Peele. It’s a sad, sad day for all us fans, but even more so for YouTube. The online video archive giant might be the ones responsible for the comic duos mega success over the past couple years. The “Substitute Teacher” sketch got 80 million views on YouTube which is a stark contrast to how many people actually watched the episode in which it came from (a mere 1.16 million). You could say Key and Peele has become one of the most successful web series in history, yet it’s Comedy Central airings got some of the lowest ratings the network has ever had. In the end both Key and Peele got what they ultimately wanted out of the show and that was grand exposure. Many consider them this generations Abbot and Costello, that go-to comedy duo that’s almost guaranteed to make us laugh. Since then the two have landed multiple television roles, Jordan will be on CBS’ upcoming comedy Life In Pieces and Keegan has a recurring role on USA’s hit comedy playing house. The two will team up again for the feature length comedy Keanu, about two friends who come up with a hair-brained scheme to get a stolen cat back by posing as a couple of drug dealers for a local street gang. The film is due out April 22, 2016 and some are already saying it’s posed for cult status. The online format fit them so perfectly because we live in a “bite-sized” world we love things in small, quick, funny doses and they delivered that in spades with their sketches. Facebook and Twitter have propelled the two into comedic legend status and their online influence is sure to be something that changes how sketch comedy is distributed to the masses.
