‘Con-Air’ Writer Is Rewriting ‘Jumanji’ Remake

DSC_011228

Sooooo, you’re really going through with this thing huh Sony. It was announced about three years ago that Sony Pictures more specifically Columbia Pictures (which is owned by Sony) would be remaking the 1995 film ‘Jumanji’. The film, if you’re unfamiliar with it, is based on the classic 1981 children’s book written by Chris Van Allsburg about a board game that literally comes to life when played.  It seemed as if the remake was stuck in limbo, there had been no word about it since it was announced.  Apparently though, they’re still doing it, even though we’ve seen that remake TWICE since the big announcement. Just recently we saw, what in my opinion is the best ‘Jumanji’ remake they’ve made thus far with Jack Black’s ‘Goosebumps.’  Then we had a not so good remake with Adam Sandler’s latest abomination in ‘Pixels’. Those two films were just from this year, we’ve actually seen a far more direct remake or even sequel to Jumanji and it was called ‘Zathura’. That film came out in 2005 and was about…you guessed it a board game that comes to life when people play it. It was even based on a children’s book by the very same author of Jumanji (way to be creative Allsburg). So the fact that Sony is going to remake this thing for the umpteenth time sort of baffles me. But what baffles me even more so, is the fact that Columbia has hired the writer of ‘Con-Air’, yes the Nicolas Cage action extravaganza from 1997, to rewrite this update of ‘Jumanji’.  Scott Rosenberg will rewrite the script originally written by ‘Stranger Than Fiction’ scribe Zack Helm. The studio wanted Rosenburg to rewrite the script so that it takes more from the book rather than the Robin Williams lead film. Whether or not his rewrite stands out from the litany of ‘Jumanji’ knocks off is another story, but we will find out on December 25th, 2016 when the film is set to be released.
