Freddie Mercury Biopic Still Alive With New Star

ben-whishaw-to-play-freddie-mercury-in-biopic

It seems as if every time we think this project is dead and buried that hand pops up from the soil. The highly anticipated and very hyped Freddie Mercury biopic. The film was once thought to be indefinitely canned but has risen like a flamboyant phoenix and looks to maybe have an exciting new star as the title character as well as a new screenwriter. Scribe Anthony McCarten who is best known for his screenplay for The Theory of Everything has signed on to rewrite the script for the biopic. On the other end producers seem to be narrowing down their choice for who will play Freddie Mercury himself but it seems that the choice has been made just not official. That choice is James Bond’s favorite little techie  “Q” or  should I say actor Ben Whishaw. The actor is the frontrunner for the coveted role and many people from the LGBT community are very excited about that because Whishaw like Mercury is openly gay which would mean for the first time in a very long time an openly gay actor got to play a real openly gay icon in a biopic. Believe it or not I think Whishaw could be a better choice than the man who was initially suppose to play the lead role, Sacha Baron Cohen. Cohen left the project because of creative differences with studio as well as members of the band Queen. Cohen wanted the film to be a hard R because he wanted the story to genuinely dive into Mercury’s hard partying ways, his struggles with HIV and his homosexuality. I’m not sure how much as changed from then to now, but I’m hoping they decide to drift a little more toward what Cohen wanted to do rather than sugarcoat the story. Only time will tell if this comes together the way everyone wants but with McCarten and Whishaw they have a better chance of success.
