Is Nickelodeon Giving 90’s Kids There Own Nostalgia Network?

nicktoons

I’m in no way a religious man, but I have prayed for years that Nickelodeon would finally wise up and realize they have a gold mine in the form of their 90s shows. Nostalgic millennials have longed for an entire network dedicated to said nostalgia and Nick may finally be responding to the demand. A cryptic tweet was sent from the former “Teen Nick: The 90’s were all that” account that read, #TheSplatIsComing. Now this means one of two things, one, Nickelodeon is delving into hardcore porn or two, the rumors that Nickelodeon is starting a new channel completely dedicated to 90s programming are true. The latter seems more plausible seeing how a YouTube video even popped up featuring the old Nick Toons jingle and montage of our favorite old cartoons like, Rocket Power, Rugrats, Doug, Rocko’s Modern Life, Ren and Stimpy etc. It would appear that the network was really trying to hype this thing up, except they haven’t even confirmed anything yet. It was earlier this month that the president of development at Nickelodeon, Russell Hicks, said the network was planning on rebooting old shows for newer audiences. If another network is added with those old cartoons and shows that are being rebooted you find themselves over saturating the properties. It would be straight up nostalgia overload and that just negates the point in my opinion. I don’t need to see a remake of Rocko’s Modern Life when I can just watch the original. I’m not totally convinced that Nick is planning on launching an entirely new channel featured in your current cable package. I feel they may go the online or streaming route which I think might work a little better, especially with the ambitious goal to remake a lot of the shows that would be on The Splat. I wouldn’t mind having the option to watch a marathon of ‘Hey, Dude’ and ‘Salute Your Shorts’ whenever I wanted. Hell, I think after having to wait 20 plus years for something like this I deserve it, all us 90’s kids do.
