LGBT Community Wants To Boycott ‘Zoolander 2’
It was only last week that Paramount pictures released their new trailer for the upcoming ‘Zoolander 2’ starring Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson. That trailer, as I described in that particular article, was sort of a piece of shit. Most of the gags seemed like the same old tired frat pack bullshit, minus one and that was the bit including Benedict Cumberbatch as an androgynous model with no gender identity, this is what I said about that part of the trailer:
“By the look of the trailer that last tidbit seems evident, Ferrell looks like he was crowbarred into the film and it doesn’t seem all that funny, at least from the trailer. I found only one part of this trailer actually funny and that was Benedict Cumberbatch’s androgynous model who has been named the ‘world’s most beautiful model’. I’m actually still laughing about that.”
Well turns out the LGBT community is not to happy about Cumberbatch’s character. LGBT activist Sarah Rose has petitioned to boycott the film, she spoke out on the film which she finds offensive to transgender people. She went on to say:
“Cumberbatch’s character is clearly portrayed as an over-the-top, cartoonish mockery of androgyne/trans/non-binary individuals… This is the modern equivalent of using blackface to represent a minority. Like any rational person, I think there’s a place for discourse and humor in society, but the last thing the transgender community needs at this moment is another harmful, cartoonish portrayal of our lives.”
That is a very valid reason to be offended. If a group of people find something offensive than maybe society should take that into account more so than we do. I’m sure that Stiller and Cumberbatch didn’t mean to piss off an entire group of people. We also have to keep into consideration that this was just a snippet from a trailer, we don’t know what the character will actually be like in the movie itself.
