Lionsgate Wants To Make ‘Hunger Games’ Prequels

HGMJ2-1940x1293

Goddamn it Lionsgate can you and your studio counterparts please let things die gracefully? Lionsgate’s biggest cash cow has recently went to slaughter, ‘The Hunger Games’ series officially concluded last month with ‘The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2’. The studio doesn’t want the games to be over just yet though, turns out they want more movies in the form of prequels. Lionsgate Vice Chairman Michael Burns said that the studio is really looking into making another viable series of films exploring Hunger Games of old. Burns said the series “will go on and on” what that means, I don’t know. But why am I so surprised by this, hell if I were Lionsgate I’d do the same but at least I’d wait until the last movie was on DVD, I mean, come on. I feel this looks a little desperate especially seeing how the studio doesn’t really have any other big time money makers. If you remember there was a time they had two. Twilight which was under Lionsgate’s sister company Summit brought the studio its first $100 million dollar opening weekends and Hunger Games followed suit. Now they’ve gone from two to zero so its no wonder they’re looking under every rock possible to find something that can bring in the numbers of those two franchises. They do still have the Divergent series but lets be honest that shit is no Hunger Games. Burns seems pretty hell bent on returning the story to the arena where the first two films (and most successful of the series) took place, he said:

“Whatever extensions of ‘The Hunger Games’ brand we pursue, the intent is not to glorify violence by arbitrarily telling arena stories, but to continue Suzanne Collins’s exploration of the concepts of just war theory.”

Curious to see how this plays out.
