LISTEN: Sam Smith Releases New Bond Theme “Writings On The Wall”

sam-smith-spectre

You ain’t slick Sam Smith. The British crooner just released his new single “Writings On The Wall” which will be the theme song for the newest Bond flick “Spectre”. Smith just so happened to release the single a mere five days before the Grammy Awards eligibility cutoff date. Seeing how he won four statues last year, it’s clear the Grammy’s are sweet on Smith and he plans on taking full advantage by releasing this track just in time for the season. But awards aside this song is just in time for the films release first in the U.K. and U.S. release of ‘Spectre’.  The song was written by Smith and has a dark, moody, tone to it, it’s slightly less dramatic than Bond theme songs of the past. Even though it has that classic Bond-esque opening, the track is more elegant than dangerous almost melancholy, which makes you wonder the tone of the movie. If it matches the song than you might get a Bond film that sticks with you and stands out from the other films. Sam Mendes has done wonders with the franchise and the musical choices have been just as good as the films themselves, save for ‘Quantum of Solace’. If you remember the song for that film, sung by Alicia Keys and Jack White, was just as bad as the movie itself. Then they’re the good Daniel Craig Bond films and their theme songs, like “You Know My Name” by Chris Cornell which captured the raw, “this ain’t your grandaddy’s 007” vibe perfectly. But Adele’s “Skyfall” from the film “Skyfall” seems to be regarded as one of if not the best Bond theme, but I have sneaking feeling this one might be considered one of Bond’s best themes. It took a couple of listens for me to come to that conclusion but thats only my opinion. Have a listen and see what you think.
