Netflix Is Making A ‘Lost In Space’ Reboot

lost-in-space

To my surprise a small smile formed on my face after I heard this news. I remember when I was a little kid one thingĀ I loved was old TV shows, ‘Dennis The Menace’,’The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis’, ‘Petticoat Junction’, the list goes on and on. Now that may seem like a random selection of shows they all hold a special place in my heart. One of those shows was also ‘Lost In Space’, which seemed like CBS was trying to capitalize on the younger demographic that didn’t really get ‘Star Trek’ which the network also made during the same time. It was a wacky, colorful, dumbed-down, kiddie version of Star Trek. Even the plot was simple, basically just taking the plot of ‘Swiss Family Robinson’ and spacing it up a little, here’s the plot:

The Robinson family was supposed to set off on a five-year mission to explore a distant planet, but an act of sabotage by the scheming Dr. Zachary Smith – who managed to get himself trapped aboard the spaceship – leaves them adrift in space for three years. The Robinsons, pilot Don West, Dr. Smith and their trusty robot move from planet to planet, always searching for a way to return to Earth.

Fairly simple, right? Now I’m sure some of you are thinking, “Wait a minute, that sounds like the plot of that shitty sci-fi movie from the 90’s starring Joey from ‘Friends’ and Commissioner Gordon. Well, that’s because it was one of the worst, most forgettable reboots Hollywood has ever made, heres that synopsis:

The space family Robinson is on a journey to Alpha Prime in the hopes of establishing a colony there and thereby saving humanity from extinction. Their plans are foiled by the evil Dr. Smith (Gary Oldman) and they find themselves curiously enough, lost in space.

That movie was ruined by trying way too hard to make it serious and extreme (I mean that in the late 90’s way), there was a lot of metallic jumpsuits, an alt rock soundtrack, and too many actors sportingĀ spiked buzz cuts. Netflix, who’s making the show, should know the right way to update this and make it something that can truly work. I still love the property and have always wanted someone to do it justice, here’s hoping they do.
