So have you ever found yourself in the toy aisle at your local Target or Wal-Mart, just staring at the all the Barbie dolls on display and thinking to yourself,”Man, how did these get so popular?” Well, if you’re a weird guy who likes to wander the toy aisles at local stores than you have a whole other set of issues, but if that thought has ever crossed your mind than you might be in luck. Reese Witherspoon and her business partner Bruna Papandrea, through their production company Pacific Standard, will team up with Bold Films to make a film based on Robin Gerber’s 2010 book “Barbie and Ruth: The Story of the World’s Most Famous Doll and the Woman Who Created Her. The two companies decided to purchase the rights to the book and will produce a film based on Ruth Handler, the woman who was inspired to create the Barbie doll after witnessing her daughter playing with paper dolls that looked like infants. Handler took issue with this; she had an epiphany, most if not all dolls back then had little girls playing the role of mother to their doll babies. Handler wanted little girls to realize they had more choices in life besides being mothers and housewives. After a trip abroad Handler found an adult novelty doll that she decided to modify in order to be more kid friendly. She pitched the doll to her husband who just so happened to own the successful toy company Mattel and the rest is history.

Bold Film CEO Michel Litva is excited to tell the story he said:

“Ruth Handler’s inspiring true story reveals the triumphs and struggles of the genius businesswoman behind the creation of Barbie, the most iconic doll in the world.”

No word yet on who will direct, write and star in the film.
