Spike Gives Series Order To ‘Red Mars’

Glad to see Spike is getting in on this new “Golden Age of television.” The network has ordered the adaptation of Kim Stanley Robinson’s award-winning “Mars Trilogy” books in an original one-hour scripted series. With the help of Skydance Television, who will be serving as the studio behind the series, Spike will produce the hour long drama. If you’re unfamiliar with the books heres a synopsis of them:
Red Mars – Red Mars starts in 2026 with the first colonial voyage to Mars aboard the Ares, the largest interplanetary spacecraft ever built and home to a crew who are to be the first hundred Martian colonists.
Green Mars – Green Mars takes its title from the stage of terraforming that has allowed plants to grow. It picks up the story 50 years after the events of Red Mars in the dawn of the 22nd century, following the lives of the remaining First Hundred and their children and grandchildren.
Blue Mars – Blue Mars takes its title from the stage of terraforming that has allowed atmospheric pressure and temperature to increase so that liquid water can exist on the planet’s surface, forming rivers and seas. It follows closely in time from the end of Green Mars and has a much wider scope than the previous two books, covering an entire century.
The books seemed like bold storytelling to say the least, how it will be turned into a TV series I don’t know but the fact they have sci-fi maestro J. Michael Straczynski writing and producing won’t hurt matters. Skydance president of television is thrilled to have such a talented, veteran science fiction writer on the project, he said:
“We are thrilled to join forces with Spike to bring Kim Stanley Robinson’s dynamic world of the Mars trilogy to television audiences for the first time ever, particularly in the brilliant creative voice of science fiction legend J. Michael Straczynski.”
Can’t wait to see how this show turns out and what it could been for Spike, we could be witnessing the making of the next FX or AMC.
