Warner Bros. Resurrects ‘Spy Hunter’ Movie

Now some of you may not remember this, so for those of you who don’t this may be an interesting bit about how Hollywood sometimes works. You see back in 2003 Universal Pictures acquired the rights to the classic video game ‘Spy Hunter’. If you’re unfamiliar with Spy Hunter heres a quick summary:

The game draws inspiration from the James Bond films and was originally supposed to carry the James Bond license. The object of the game is to drive down roads in the technologically advanced “Interceptor” car and destroy various enemy vehicles with a variety of onboard weapons.

Now we’ve had some pretty shitty video game adaptations to say the least, but ‘Spy Hunter’ just seemed like something would work perfectly as a big-budget Hollywood blockbuster…you’d think. The film, though, didn’t have that kind of luck, it seemed to be plagued, better yet, cursed from day one. Heres a brief history on ‘Spy Hunter’ courtesy of ComicBookMovie.com

‘Between 2003 to 2007, Universal Pictures tried numerous times to bring the Spy Hunter video game to life on the big screen, but they were unsuccessful. Even though they had Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson all set to star in the film adaptation, the project would go through several rewrites and several directors. In the beginning, Broken Arrow director, John Woo, was set to helm the project but he left due to “scheduling conflicts.” A few years later, Paul W. S. Anderson (“Resident Evil”), who has the distinction of being one of the few directors to successfully adapt a video game for film was attached, but he too would later pull out.’

But it looks like Warner Bros. now has it’s hands on the property and have every intention on actually producing the film. Dwayne Johnson and Jessica Biel, who was set to co-star back in 2003, look like they’re not coming back, but Nelson Greaves and Sam Chalsen (Sleepy Hollow) are set to write the script. Dan Lin and Roy Lee are producing with John Middleton and Doug Davison executive producing.

No word yet when production starts.
