‘Zorro’ Is About To Go All Mad Max In Reboot – The Daily Double Talk

Mask of Zorro 1

By Tommy McGrew

This is got to be one of the biggest what the fucks I’ve read in a while. Clearly the train wreck and subsequent hot mess that was the fantastic four reboot hasn’t taught very studios much. For some reason they still have this urge to over complicate film properties and franchises that they simply don’t need to be fucked with. Case in point Zorro, we all know Zorro, the 19th century masked avenger that protects the poor from the brutal Spanish forces in California. Real simple right that’s the base of every Zorro story and you usually build a plot from that. Well not anymore to hell with all that screw the 19th century screw Spanish rule in California just fuck it all. Because that’s exactly what they did. Zorro will now be set in a post-apocalyptic near future, that’s right it’s not bad enough we have Zorro taking on Django but now might be seeing him taking on Mad Max also. The film will be titled Zorro reborn and although it is set in the future it will still be the same Zorro we know and love taking on tyranny and protecting the weak. The Hollywood Reporter provided a little more info:

Zorro Reborn is a post-apocalyptic take on the myth of Zorro, the pulp hero created in 1919. The traditional stories cast Zorro as a hero of peasants and farmers who fought against corrupt and brutal officials of Spanish-held California. Reborn is set in the near future but keeps the idea of a masked and caped stranger taking on tyrants.

I know it seems that I’ve been a little rough on this idea in reality it is something that I can give a chance after looking at the trailer once it’s released of course. But this story make me a little sad, I mean it’s pretty evident that this would not have gotten greenlit had it not been for the success of mad Max fury Road. It’s typical of studios to dig through the catalog to find any property that could be transformed into whatever the most popular movie or movies are at the time. It seems that when you make a movie for the wrong reasons such as that it typically doesn’t turn out too well once again ask 20th Century Fox about fantastic four. But if there is truly a passion to get this Zorro film made and there is heart behind the writing and production then this will no doubt be something worth checking out.
